When should I take my child to a dentist?
Your child should begin seeing a dentist regularly when their first tooth comes in or around their first birthday, whichever happens first. Their first visit will likely be short, but it’s important that their gums and whatever teeth they have be examined to ensure that things are progressing normally and everything looks good. Children should visit the dentist for routine cleanings and exams just as often as adults, or every six months at least. It’s important for patients of all ages to receive regular teeth cleanings to clear away any plaque or tartar that has built up in hard-to-reach areas.
What should I do if my child has a toothache?
If your child mentions that they have a toothache, you will want to schedule an appointment with our team as soon as possible to make sure the problem is taken care of sooner rather than later. In the meantime, we recommend giving them child-friendly pain reliever or having them gently hold an ice pack on their cheek to numb the pain. You can also have them rinse with a warm saltwater solution, as this can help relieve the soreness and clear away bacteria. If their pain becomes unbearable, please call our office and then bring them in for an emergency visit.
What should I do if my child doesn’t want to brush their teeth?
Children go through many phases throughout childhood, and an aversion to teeth cleaning may be a phase your child goes through at one point. When this happens, we recommend parents get creative to see what will encourage their kiddo to cooperate when it’s time to brush their teeth.
You can put on a song that lasts for two minutes and have a dance party while they’re brushing their teeth. Using fun toothbrushes or offering small prizes like stickers can help your child see daily oral care as a fun activity. It can also help to have someone else, preferably an expert, explain the importance of dental care. Our team is always happy to help our young patients establish healthy oral care habits and encourage them to take care of their teeth and gums.
